How to run a cycle

Set volume to ~50%

Loud enough to feel the vibration in your hand, not painful in your ear. There's no benefit to maxing it out.

Grille facing down

Hold the phone speaker-down over a soft surface so anything that loosens has somewhere to go.

Run one 30–45s cycle

Then check the speaker. Repeat once or twice with a short break if you still hear crackle or muffling.

What this actually does

Low-frequency sound moves the speaker cone back and forth fast enough to physically shake loose water sitting in the mesh — the same underlying idea Apple documents for the Watch's Water Eject feature. It's a real, low-risk technique for light moisture or dust. It is not going to reverse an actual liquid-damage event, fix a torn diaphragm, or repair anything mechanical. If your phone was fully submerged, dry it properly and consider a professional check instead.

Does a sound tone actually get water out of a phone speaker?+
It can help with small amounts of trapped water. A low-frequency tone vibrates the speaker diaphragm, and that vibration can shake loose droplets sitting in the mesh — the same principle behind Apple Watch's built-in Water Eject shortcut. It's not a fix for a phone that's been fully submerged or is already showing liquid-damage indicators.
Is it safe to run this at high volume?+
Start around 30–50% volume. There's no evidence that louder is more effective at ejecting water, and running any speaker at full volume for long periods adds unnecessary wear. Never hold the speaker directly against your ear.
How long should I run a cleaning cycle?+
30–45 seconds per cycle, speaker facing down, with a short break between cycles. Two or three cycles is a reasonable amount to try before concluding it isn't helping.
Do I need to install an app?+
No. This runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Nothing is downloaded, recorded, or sent anywhere — the tone is generated locally and never leaves your device.
Can this fix a muffled call speaker or earpiece?+
If the muffling is caused by dust or residue in the earpiece grille, running Earpiece target with the grille facing down for 30–45 seconds may help. If the muffling started after a drop or a repair, the cause is more likely mechanical, and a sound tone won't fix that.
What should I do if my phone was actually submerged?+
Power it off, don't charge it, don't shake it, and let it air-dry in a well-ventilated spot for at least 24–48 hours before turning it on. For anything beyond light splashes, this tool is not a substitute for professional repair.
What does the vibration toggle do?+
On devices and browsers that support it (mainly Android Chrome — not currently iOS Safari), it pulses your phone's vibration motor in short bursts timed to the sweep, adding physical shake on top of the acoustic sweep. It stops automatically the moment you stop the cycle.
